Disney Cruise Line Stateroom Categories Explained by Ship Class

- 9 min read

When booking a Disney Cruise, the room categories can feel confusing at first. You may see options like 4A, 5B, 9C, 10A, or 11B, but those codes are not random. They help identify the stateroom type, approximate location, view, and sometimes the layout or level of service.
At a high level, Disney Cruise Line staterooms still fall into four broad types:
Concierge
Verandah
Oceanview
Inside
The numbered category usually tells you the general room type. The letter usually helps distinguish location, layout, deck, view, or a ship-specific variation.
In general:
Categories 1–3 are usually Concierge.
Categories 4–7 are usually Verandah rooms.
Categories 8–9 are usually Oceanview rooms.
Categories 10–11 are usually Inside rooms.
The exact names and room types vary by ship, so it helps to compare ships by class.

What the Letters Usually Mean
The letter after the number is usually a location or layout distinction. It does not always mean the same exact thing on every ship, but generally:
A is often the most preferred location within that category.
B is usually a similar room type in a slightly different location.
C/D/E usually indicate additional location tiers, special layouts, obstructed views, balcony differences, or more limited inventory.
For example, a 5A and 5C may both be verandah rooms, but they may be on different decks, in different areas of the ship, or have different view/balcony characteristics.
Why the Category Code Is Only Part of the Decision
The category code is helpful, but it does not tell the whole story. Two rooms in the same category can still feel different based on:
Forward, midship, or aft location
Port or starboard side
Deck level
Distance to elevators
Proximity to kids clubs, pools, dining, theaters, or adult areas
Whether the view is obstructed
Whether the balcony is open, solid-wall, enclosed, extended, or partially enclosed
Whether the room connects to another stateroom
Whether the room sleeps 3, 4, or 5 guests
Whether the room has an accessible layout
Whether the room is above, below, or near busy public spaces
That is why it is not always best to simply pick the lowest price in a category.
How I Help Guests Choose the Right Disney Cruise Stateroom
As your travel advisor, I help translate the category codes into real-life choices. Instead of asking you to sort through dozens of room numbers and confusing labels, I help narrow the options based on how your family actually travels.
I can help you compare:
Whether an inside, oceanview, verandah, or concierge room makes the most sense
Which category gives you the best value for your sailing
Whether a higher letter category is worth the savings
Whether a verandah is worth it for your itinerary
Which rooms may have obstructed views or unusual balcony layouts
Which room locations are best for motion sensitivity
Whether midship is worth the price difference
Whether connecting rooms are better than one larger room
Whether your family needs a room that sleeps 3, 4, or 5
Which categories are available on your specific ship
Which categories are similar across ships and which are ship-specific
Whether concierge is worth considering for your priorities
The goal is not always to book the most expensive room. The goal is to book the room that fits your family best.
My Simple Advice
For most families, the best starting point is usually one of these:
Inside Stateroom: Best for saving money.
Oceanview Stateroom: Best for natural light without paying for a balcony.
Verandah Stateroom: Best overall balance of comfort, view, and private outdoor space.
Concierge: Best for extra service, more space, and a more premium experience.
For shorter cruises, an inside or oceanview room may be perfectly comfortable. For longer cruises, Alaska, Europe, or special milestone trips, a verandah can be worth serious consideration. For guests who want the easiest and most elevated experience, concierge may be the right fit.
Final Thoughts
Disney Cruise Line stateroom categories look complicated at first, but they become much easier once you understand the pattern. The number tells you the broad type of room, and the letter helps narrow down the location or variation within that type.
Still, the best room is not always obvious from the category code alone. That is where working with a travel advisor can help. I can compare the ship, itinerary, room location, price difference, sleeping layout, and your family’s priorities so you feel confident before you book.
