Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Discovery Exchange and joining a crew on your Disney Cruise Line sailing.

The Basics

What is a Fish Extender?
A Fish Extender is a multi-pocket hanging organizer that attaches to the fish-shaped hook outside your stateroom door on Disney Cruise Line ships. Guests who participate hang one outside their cabin and leave small gifts for other cabins in their crew. It's one of the most beloved DCL traditions — a fun way to connect with fellow cruisers before and during your sailing.

What is Discovery Exchange?
Discovery Exchange is an independently organized guest exchange platform for Disney Cruise Line sailings. We match registered cabins into crews for Fish Extender, Pixie Dust, Ornament Exchange, and Magnet Exchange — then send each cabin a personalized Voyage Packet with their crew list and gifting notes before sailing.

Is Discovery Exchange affiliated with Disney or Disney Cruise Line?
No. Discovery Exchange is designed and hosted by Baird Discovery Co. and is completely independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Disney, Disney Cruise Line, or The Walt Disney Company.

The Exchanges

What exchanges can I join?
You can join any combination of four exchanges:

  • Fish Extender — Small gifts left in cabin Fish Extenders throughout your sailing

  • Pixie Dust — Surprise gifts left anonymously for fellow cruisers

  • Ornament Exchange — Ornaments exchanged with your assigned crew

  • Magnet Exchange — Disney-themed magnets exchanged with your assigned crew

You choose which ones to join when you register. You are not required to participate in all four.

Do I have to join all four exchanges?
Not at all. Sign up for whichever ones interest you. Your Voyage Packet will only include the exchanges you selected.

What do I need to buy or bring?
That depends on which exchanges you join and how many cabins are in your crew. Most cruisers budget a small amount per cabin — the most important thing is putting thought into it, not spending a lot. Your Voyage Packet will include notes about allergies, food preferences, and celebrations to help you plan.

Registration

How do I sign up?
Fill out the registration form on this page. You'll share your cabin details, which exchanges you want to join, and some information about your family to help us match you well.

New exchange signups are not accepted after the final signup deadline 15 days prior to scheduled sailing.

What is a Boarding Code?
Your Boarding Code is a unique identifier assigned when you register. You'll use it to update your registration if your cabin number changes or your details need adjusting. Keep it handy — it's included in your registration confirmation email.

What if I don't have my cabin number yet?
No problem. You can register with GTY or TBD and update your cabin number later using your Boarding Code. Just make sure to update before your final packet is sent so your crew has accurate information.

Can I update my registration after submitting?
Yes. Use the update form and your Boarding Code to change your cabin number, family details, allergy notes, or food preferences at any time before the final packet is sent.

After crew assignments are locked, guests may update cabin numbers and important details, but exchange group assignments do not change.

Updates received before the 7-Day Update Packet may be reflected in that packet. Updates received after the 7-Day Update Packet may be included in a final embarkation-day update if they affect cabin delivery information.

Crew Assignments

How are crews assigned?
Primary crew assignments are created 90 days before sailing based on cabin location, family type preferences, and signup timing. We use cabin zone (Forward, Midship, or Aft) and family preferences as soft matching guidelines to group compatible cabins together.

How big are the crews?
Most crews are between 5 and 10 cabins. Groups need a minimum of 5 cabins to be finalized. If your group is below that threshold when you register, your Voyage Packet will show a preview list that may grow before the final packet is sent.

What if I sign up after the 90-day mark?
Late signups may be placed into a separate Late Boarding crew if enough participants are available after the primary assignment date. All signups close 15 days before sailing.

Will I be in the same crew for every exchange?
Not necessarily. We intentionally vary crew assignments across exchanges when possible so that the same group of cabins isn't in every exchange together. This gives you a chance to connect with more fellow cruisers.

The Voyage Packet

What is a Voyage Packet?
Your Voyage Packet is a personalized PDF sent to you before sailing. It includes your crew lists for each selected exchange, gifting notes covering allergies and celebrations, your Boarding Code, and update instructions. It's designed to be your all-in-one reference for participating in your exchanges.

When will I receive my Voyage Packet?
Packets are sent after primary crew assignments are finalized, typically around the 90-day mark before sailing. If a cabin update affects your crew list after that, a revised packet may be sent closer to your sail date.

What if my crew list changes after I receive my packet?
If a cabin update affects your exchange list, a revised Voyage Packet may be sent before sailing. Always use the most recent packet you've received.
